The most popular and active sports in Georgia are football (soccer), basketball, rugby, tennis, horse riding and alpine skiing. People of different ages play these sports. There are several swimming pools, tennis courts, football fields, basketball courts, gyms, cycle tracks and etc.
Georgia is one of the centers for mountaineering. The state is crossed by the ranges of the Greater Caucasus (highest peaks: Mt. Shkhara , 5068m, Mt Kazbek, 5047m/16,554ft). Still further to the south the Minor Caucasian ranges rise to the medium height (Meskheti, Shavsheti and other ranges), reaching 2850 m. The peaks of the Greater Caucasus and the South Georgian Upland are diverse and numerous.
The best choice for winter sports is Gudauri and Bakuriani. These resorts are very popular among tourists and mountain skiers.
The best known peaks in Georgia are Kazbek (5047m), Tetnuldi (4853m), Shkhara (5068m), Ushba (4700m) and Djangitau (5059m).
Professor Giorgi nikoladze (1888-1931) – famous Georgian scientist and athlete (gymnast and mountainclimber) was one of the founders of Georgian sport and tourist movement.
Georgia is proud of 28 Olympic Champions, 23 silver and 38 bronze Olympic medalists. There are 195 World Champions, 77 World Cup Winners, 297 European Champions, 89 European Cup Winners in Georgia . Representatives of Georgia have held 69 World Records in 19 sports.
Georgian Women’s chess school is well-known all around the world. During 1961-1991 Nona Gaprindashvili and Maia Chiburdanidze won World Champions titles five times each.
Georgian women teams won first places on the Chess Olympiads in 1980 ( USSR ), 1982 ( USSR ), 1992, 1994 and 1996. |
