Shava Amiranashvili National Museum of Fine Arts is the main gallery in Tbilisi and provides a useful introduction to Georgian painting, particularly of the ninteenth and twentieth centuries: Pirosmani, Kakabadze, Gudiasvili, Akhvlediani, etc; It holds Georgia's most exquisite and prized possessions both royal and ecclesiastical. The Treasury contains Medieval art from the 9th to 14th centuries; ancient chased icons, cloisonne enamel works, jewelry; 19th - 20th cc collection of European painting.
Archaeological-Architectural Museum-Reserve of Gonio-Apsarosi covers the area of Gonio castle. There you can see: The Ancient Roman fortress, that is a defensive wall of the most perfect stonework; remains of the monumental constructions of Roman and Early Byzantine periods, bathhouse, water supply system, fragments of the caravansary of the XVI-XVII cc AD, late medieval clay baking ovens, etc. Archaeological material discovered on the territory of the reserve is of various historical periods with the earliest samples dated by VIII-VII cc BC and the latest - by the late XIX c.
The open air ethnographical museum is situated in a picturesque area near Turtle Lake. The wooden houses have been moved piece by piece from their native villages. There are more than 70 dwellings from 10 distinct regions in Georgia and more than 7,000 artifacts. The architectural style and way of living is the main theme of this architectural theme park. ![]()
Vani museum was founded in 1985 . The museum houses the archaeology collection excavated in the littel town of Vani. The Gold Fund was opened at the museum in 1987, after the discovery of the rich burial. In the Gold Fund are kept unique samples of goldsmith work from Vani site. The permanent exhibition of the museum displays cultural development of the site from VI c. up to I c. B.C. ![]()
The town of Gori is Stalin's birthplace. The museum exhibits re-create surreal and revealing scenes from the life of the dictator and include unique photos, gifts and furniture. The house where Stalin was born is preserved under a stone canopy nearby. A large statue of the "Leader of the People" stands in the central square. ![]()
Simon Janashia State Museum is the main museum in Georgia and covers the history of the country from prehistoric times up to the start of the twentieth century. Particularly significant is the treasury, which contains an exhibition of gold work dated from the 6th century BC. These include extraordinary specimens of gold filigree and reposes work discovered at important archeological sites. ![]()
Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography was founded in 1936. In the Museum are kept very important and valuable archaeological and ethnographical materials, rich collection of the Georgian manuscripts, icons, etc. There are high level items in the collections donated to Svaneti churches by Georgian kings. There are some items of foreign origin, like Syrian, Sasanian Persia, Byzantine Empire, and Venice. ![]()
Tsinandali is the Kakhetian residence of the 19th century Prince, poet and public figure, Alexandre Chavchavadze. The exhibits of Tsinandali museum recreate scenes from intellectual life of 18th - 19th cc. It also offers a beautiful garden and also the wine cellar,where are kept unique collection of wine (20.000 bottles). |
